What is the most important lesson the empath must learn from the narcissist in order to evolve?

My experience with a 30 year marriage to a narcissistic personality disorder wife represents a journey that ran the entire gauntlet of empath-narc dynamics. The cost in lost opportunity alone was without measure unless one genuinely can derive a value with the answer to your question.

I believe the lesson that one must learn in order to evolve begins in honesty with oneself.

The narc aside, you must drill down to why you truly allowed this type of human being into the inter-sanctuary of your existence. I know I knew early and often this woman was troubled. Granted, I had no diagnostic tools other than intuition while nevertheless I realized she was fundamentally shaken if not emotionally struggling.
